On January 14, Lëvizja VETËVENDOSJE!  will organize a popular blockade of two border points with Serbia, in the north at Merdare and east, at Dheu i Bardhe. The decision follows the approval of a Resolution last month by Kosova’s opposition in Parliament, calling for full political and economic reciprocity. In December, Vetëvendosje’s General Council voted overwhelmingly in favour of upholding Parliament’s Resolution by holding a blockade.

The Kosova Government has avoided taking action following the Resolution, and claims that it is already fully respecting reciprocity with Serbia. Vetëvendosje argues that by not respecting Parliament’s Resolution, the Government is undemocratically. Activists have held a number of press conferences presenting evidence showing that trading reciprocity is not being respected.

They argue that agreements reached in Brussels between Kosova and Serbia are fundamentally unequal, requiring Kosova to make damaging concessions to its declared sovereignty. The blockade presents a serious challenge to the Government’s credibility and its negotiation platform. The Minister of the Interior has already warned that police will prevent the protest from taking place. There is no sign of backing down from Vetëvendosje which protested against the visit of Serbia’s President Tadiç to Kosova last week.

The movement is energetically pursuing an intense mobilization campaign and encouraging Albanians from all areas in the region to support their protest under the motto ‘Serbia will not pass’.

On January 5, Dardan Molliqaj and Visar Ymeri, activists of Lëvizja VETËVENDOSJE! (Movement for SELF-DETERMINATION!) held a press conference in which they confirmed that on January 14, Lëvizja VETËVENDOSJE! will blockade two border points with Serbia to implement reciprocity measures with Serbia.

The decision follows the approval of a Parliamentary Resolution last month by Kosova’s opposition, calling for full political and economic reciprocity, which the Government is not implementing. In December, Vetëvendosje’s General Council voted overwhelmingly in favour of upholding Parliament’s Resolution by holding a blockade.
