Kosovar Minister wanted to visit area with Albanian minority

(ANSAmed) – BELGRADE, JANUARY 12 – The Serbian authorities today kept Kosovo’s Minister for Diaspora Ibrahim Makolli from entering the country. Makolli wanted to visit Presevo and Bujanovac in the southern region of Serbia, areas with an Albanian majority.

Budimir Mihajlovic, head of the administrative district of Pcinja, told Tanjug today that the police in service at the Konculj border crossing have not allowed Makolli to enter Serbia, without specifying the reason why.

According to Kosovar sources, the Serbian authorities have questioned Makolli’s status of representative of an independent State (which Serbia does not recognise), allowing him to enter Serbia only as private Serbian citizen. Makolli was awaited at the border by local leaders from Presevo and Bujanovac.

According to the same sources, he later had a meeting in the neutral zone with Riza Halimi, a member of the Serbian Parliament of the Albanian ethnic group.

In the past months people in Presevo and Bujanovac, situated close to Kosovo, staged several demonstrations against what is seen as the excessive centralism of Serbian politics; the Albanian minority in fact asks for more autonomy. (ANSAmed)
