A dog previously used for medical experiments in an Albanian laboratory has been brought over to the UK to be rehomed by a woman living in Kent.

Hope arrived at the Port of Dover earlier and was met by her new owner, Mandy Flisher, before being taken to her home in Deal.

Her release from medical testing was brokered by Vicky Fraser, who runs the animal campaign body, Unite To Care.

She said dogs no longer deemed usable for testing were usually put down.

Scarred throat

Ms Fraser has been working alongside the campaign group, the Beagle Freedom Project, to put an end to the practice.

Hope had been used for training of anaesthetic procedures, including inserting breathing tubes and administering local anaesthetic.

Ms Fraser said it was presumed she now had scarring in her throat as she was sensitive in that area and could not be led using a collar.

She said Hope had also been used for developing new surgical techniques, and had endured several operations.

Ms Fraser was contacted by a member of staff who was employed at the research facility in Albania and wanted help to get Hope out.

She said: “Now that Hope is finally in the UK, I feel utterly delighted and exhausted.

“I would do it all again in an instant if any facility came to us and demonstrated they genuinely do want to reduce the loss of suffering and life to the animals in their care, by allowing dogs to retire rather than being euthanized.”
