The Commander of the Special Unit of the Kosovo Police, Amir Gërguri, has been suspended from work. He was suspended after violating emergency measures to prevent the Covid-19 virus, imposed by the Government of Kosovo.
The decision to suspend Amir Gërguri has been confirmed by the General Director of the Kosovo Police, Mr. Rashit Qalaj.
On March 18, 2020, after a photo published on the social network Facebook, police officer Gërguri was seen accompanied by the brother of the President of the Republic of Kosovo, Mr. Hashim Thaçi. The feast meeting between Gërguri, the President’s brother and some others was held in the village of Burojë, in the birthplace of Hashim Thaçi. The photo shows the crunch of beer glasses and the enthusiasm of those present throughout that feast.
The reasons for this alcohol festival are not known, however, such gatherings at this time of pandemics are dangerous and also prohibited by decisions of the Ministry of Health, as they may affect the spread of Covid-19 Pandemic.
The close ties of this policeman with Thaçi’s brother, can be presumed to have amnestied the brutal violence used by Gërguri, in the protests of 2012. In a protest organized by Vetëvendosje Movement, Amir Gërguri had kicked the protesters lying on the street.
The thing is, for me and others who look at that picture, you look bad. Because you have the uniform. Because he is lying down. Because you kick a lying citizen in uniform. You know, of course, that this is a criminal offense. In a legal state, you would be prosecuted for this violation, for abuse of office. I want you to think for yourself what it means for your uniform, and for the state you protect, the fact that no one is prosecuting you.
